About This Project

Dubai Food Tour is a travel-friendly mobile app built for food lovers and tourists exploring Dubai's culinary scene. It combines curated restaurant recommendations, detailed menu previews, real user reviews, and GPS-powered turn-by-turn navigation into one immersive discovery experience. Designed for both first-time visitors and long-term residents, the app makes finding and reaching the best food experiences in Dubai effortless and enjoyable.

The Problem

Dubai has one of the most diverse and dynamic food scenes in the world — spanning everything from Michelin-starred fine dining to hidden street food gems from dozens of cuisines. But for tourists and new residents, discovering the right place to eat was overwhelming. Generic platforms like Google Maps and Zomato showed thousands of options with no curation, no context, and no understanding of what makes Dubai's food culture unique.

Key pain points:
- No dedicated platform celebrating Dubai's culinary identity and diversity
- Generic review apps offered no editorial curation — finding hidden gems required significant research
- Tourists struggled with navigation in Dubai's complex urban layout, especially in malls, souks, and multi-level venues
- No unified experience combining discovery, menu preview, reviews, and navigation in one flow
- Language barriers made menus and reviews inaccessible to a large portion of Dubai's international visitor base
- Food travelers had no way to build and follow curated food trails or themed experiences

Our Solution

We designed and built Dubai Food Tour as a dedicated culinary discovery app — combining editorial curation with live user content and GPS navigation into one seamless mobile experience.

Core features delivered:
- Curated Restaurant Discovery — editorially curated collections by cuisine type, neighborhood, dining occasion, price range, and unique experience tags (rooftop dining, hidden gems, street food, etc.)
- Rich Restaurant Profiles — each listing includes full menu previews with photos, cuisine tags, price indicators, opening hours, and highlights of signature dishes
- GPS-Powered Navigation — integrated Google Maps navigation that launches directly from any restaurant listing, with smart routing optimized for Dubai's complex mall and souk environments
- User Reviews & Ratings — verified review system with photo uploads, dish-specific ratings, and helpful/not helpful voting to surface the most useful community content
- Curated Food Trails — themed multi-stop food experience routes (e.g., Old Dubai Street Food Trail, Modern Arabic Fine Dining Tour) that users can follow with in-app navigation between stops
- Save & Wishlist — users can save restaurants to personal lists and plan future visits
- Multi-Language Support — English and Arabic interface with menu translations for key dishes

Our Process

Phase 1 — Research & Discovery (2 Weeks)
Conducted field research in Dubai — visiting key dining districts (Downtown, Deira, JBR, Al Quoz) and interviewing tourists and food enthusiasts about their discovery and navigation pain points. Analyzed competitor apps and identified the gap between generic review platforms and a dedicated culinary experience app. Defined the core user personas: the food-focused tourist, the Dubai resident food explorer, and the culinary content creator.

Phase 2 — UX Design & User Flows (3 Weeks)
Mapped all primary user flows — onboarding, discovery browsing, restaurant detail, GPS navigation launch, review submission, and food trail following. Created low-fidelity wireframes for all screens and conducted usability testing with 15 target users before moving to visual design. Prioritized reducing the steps between "opening the app" and "navigating to a restaurant" to under 3 taps.

Phase 3 — Visual & Interaction Design (3 Weeks)
Designed a rich, food-first visual language — full-bleed food photography, warm color palette, immersive card layouts, and smooth micro-animations that make browsing feel like flipping through a premium food magazine. Built a complete design system covering 60+ components across all screen states.

Phase 4 — Mobile App Development (6 Weeks)
Built with React Native for simultaneous iOS and Android deployment. Implemented the discovery feed with smart filtering, restaurant detail screens, GPS navigation integration via Google Maps API, the review system with photo upload, and the food trail experience with progress tracking between stops.

Phase 5 — Backend & Content Pipeline (3 Weeks)
Built Node.js APIs for restaurant data, reviews, user accounts, and food trails. Set up Firebase for real-time review updates and push notifications. Built an admin panel for the editorial team to manage restaurant listings, curate collections, and publish new food trails.

Phase 6 — Testing & Launch (2 Weeks)
Beta tested with 80 users across tourist and resident profiles in Dubai. Optimized GPS handoff timing and navigation accuracy in complex indoor venues. Conducted full QA on both iOS and Android. Submitted to App Store and Google Play and managed the review and approval process through to launch.

Results

- 500+ restaurants cataloged and live at launch across all major Dubai dining districts
- 15 curated food trails published covering Dubai's most iconic culinary experiences
- 4.8/5 average app store rating in the first month post-launch
- GPS navigation used in over 70% of all app sessions — the most-used feature by far
- User-submitted photos exceeded editorial uploads within 6 weeks of launch
- Downloaded by users from 40+ countries — reflecting Dubai's international tourist base
- Client praised the immersive food discovery experience and the quality of the food trail feature as exceeding the original brief
